The River Charity section is designed to help people get involved in charity projects at home and abroad...

Many of the communities we travel through get very little benefit from the whitewater tourist. This is something the RiverNomad Team are working to change. By identifying worthy community based projects and working to their needs, we hope to effect some positive changes in parts of the world which give us so much...

Update from Kumanii, Ecuador

Dear Colin,

I am very sorry to inform you that we are closing both Kumanii Lodge and Foundation. Over the last 6 months, the guerrilla FARC has moved into our region, and they are now controling it entirely. It is too risky for us to bring tourists and volunteers into the area, and also our own Foundation members and workers are potential kidnapping targets.

Although it has been so sad for us to give up after this much investment of time, resources, and hope, we feel that we have no other choice. Evidently, Ecuador's new president favors the FARC, like his role model, Chavez, and he did not allow the Ecuadorian army to take any action to control the guerrilla on time. At this point, I believe it is too late. Even if the government watned the FARC to leave, it would be very difficult, and bloody, to get them out.

Although the FARC is now controling most aspects of the villagers' lives, they are not allowing any logging or mining in the area. I suppose that is the one small piece of good news.

Kind regards,

Alyssa

Official RiverNomad Projects:

Kullu School for the Blind

The Zanskar team have raised over €4,000 so far for this small school on the Beas River in Northern India.

Irish Cancer Society

The Irish Cancer Society offers support to hundreds of families in Ireland. Team Zanskar raised €5,000 from DVD sales in 2005.

Kumanii Foundation, Ecuador

The Kumanii foundation is working hard to preserve indigenous and afro-ecuadorian communities in the Choco rainforest in Northwest Ecuador.

It's a way of life that is being threatened by the logging interests of big multi-nationals. The RiverNomad crew visited their project in December 2005.

See the Kumanii website for more and keep an eye on RiverNomad.com for more info on ways to get involved.

Partner Projects

Softpower, Uganda

Dr Jesse Stone is a kayaker who left her practice in New York to establish a health centre, right by the famous White Nile. The centre is in partnership with a broader network of education projects in the Jinja area.

All these projects welcome involvement from travellers and offer a great chance to expand your horizons a little beyond the NRE bar!
